About this role

We are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer with passion for using machine learning to create intelligent applications. As a Machine Learning Engineer, you will be part of the Pricing Data Team inside the User Behavior Data Team under the umbrella of Data and Analytics pillar with 500+ data engineers, analysts, scientists.

You will collaboratively design, build and will focus on evolving existing machine learning and AI capabilities across the platform, improving those capabilities, and innovating new ones for the future. As a member of the Pricing Data Team, you will develop solutions to estimate demand price elasticity and generate counterfactuals through simulation, finally optimize consumer pricing policy to ensure a reliable, efficient, and revenue generated service.

These are some of the key components to the position:

• Design, develop, and train data science models to solve complex business problems, taking full end-to-end ownership from initial prototyping to production deployment.
• Strong knowledge of regression, boosting gradient, causal inference data science models, feature engineering and evaluation of model performance.
• Develop the architectural design of ML systems, building both the core algorithmic training pipelines and the scalable inference and monitoring infrastructure.
• Collaborate extensively along with other Data Scientists, Data Engineers, and Product stakeholders to bridge the gap between model development and production systems.
• Drive the adoption of MLOps best practices (e.g., CI/CD for ML, model versioning, feature stores) to accelerate the feedback loop for Data Scientists.
• Communicate the complexities of ML systems (e.g.,e.g., algorithmic choices, latency vs. accuracy trade-offs) effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Build and maintain a strong network across the Data and Engineering organizations to ensure ML systems integrate seamlessly with the wider platform.

What will you bring to the team?

• Strong experience in machine learning, specifically developing ML infrastructure platforms for consumer pricing and policy-related products.
• Hands-on experience developing data science models (predicting and causal modelling) using Python libraries such as pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, and TensorFlow.
• Proficiency in Python and a strong understanding of software engineering principles (object-oriented design, design patterns, testing) applied to ML.
• Demonstrable experience designing and operating ML systems in production (beyond notebook-based training), including familiarity with serving patterns such as REST APIs, batch inference, and event-driven architectures.
• Ability to work independently and solve complex problems, with a proven track record of productising and deploying models using cloud-native ML platforms (e.g., AWS SageMaker, GCP Vertex AI).
• Familiarity with orchestration, tracking, and containerisation tools, particularly Airflow, MLflow, and Docker.
• Solid Understanding of data engineering fundamentals (e.g., SQL, distributed data processing) to debug and optimise data flows.

Beschrijving

Als Forward Deployed AI Engineer bij PwC werk je dicht bij de klant en de mensen die de oplossing gebruiken. Je onderzoekt hoe hun processen werkelijk werken, brengt een nog onduidelijk probleem terug tot iets dat je kunt bouwen en vertaalt feedback uit de praktijk direct naar werkende software.

Je schrijft productiecode, bouwt integraties en brengt oplossingen naar productie. Je wacht niet tot alle requirements zijn uitgewerkt, maar stelt vragen, maakt aannames expliciet en bouwt snel een eerste versie om met gebruikers te toetsen wat daadwerkelijk werkt.

Waar je terechtkomt

Binnen het Data & AI Consulting-team van PwC Nederland werk je aan complexe vraagstukken bij ministeries, uitvoeringsorganisaties, financiële instellingen en grote commerciële opdrachtgevers. Je helpt klanten om generatieve AI niet alleen te verkennen, maar daadwerkelijk onderdeel te maken van hun processen, applicaties en dagelijkse werk.

Forward deployed betekent bij ons dat je regelmatig dicht op de praktijk van de klant werkt. Je spreekt met gebruikers en domeinexperts, werkt met echte data en bestaande systemen en ontwikkelt de oplossing samen met het klantteam. Maar, je begint niet vanaf nul: we nemen onze AI-versnellers en frameworks mee naar de klant en versterken daarmee onze eigen producten. Afhankelijk van de fase van het traject werk je bij de klant, op ons kantoor in Amsterdam of vanuit huis.

Belangrijk om te weten wat deze rol níet is. Je bent geen consultant die alleen analyseert en adviseert, geen sales engineer die vooral demo’s bouwt en geen software engineer die uitsluitend vanuit een uitgewerkt backlog werkt. Je bent en blijft een engineer. Je schrijft productiecode en bent aanspreekbaar op wat je bouwt, dus we meten je niet af op je PowerPoint slides en beschermen je focustijd.

Tegelijk ga je zelf naar de bron. Samen met onze consultants spreek je met gebruikers, onderzoek je data en processen en stel je aannames ter discussie. Ons werk is pas geslaagd als de oplossing technisch werkt én in de dagelijkse praktijk waarde oplevert.

Dit ga je doen

Je werkt van een nog niet volledig uitgewerkt klantvraagstuk naar een AI-oplossing die in de dagelijkse praktijk wordt gebruikt. Je combineert discovery, software-engineering en klantgerichte delivery. Concreet:

• Je onderzoekt samen met gebruikers het echte probleem. Je brengt processen, knelpunten, data en bestaande systemen in kaart en vertaalt een nog onduidelijke klantvraag naar heldere requirements, succescriteria en een eerste leverbare stap.
• Je bouwt en toetst snel een eerste werkende oplossing. Met echte gebruikers en realistische data test je aannames en ontwikkel je GenAI-oplossingen met bijvoorbeeld LLM’s, RAG, agents en reguliere softwarecomponenten.
• Je integreert de oplossing in de klantomgeving. Je bouwt API’s, datastromen, authenticatie en koppelingen met bestaande applicaties en systemen. Daarbij maak je bewust de afweging wanneer AI waarde toevoegt en wanneer reguliere softwarelogica beter past. We werken voor klanten waar security, privacy en compliancy van levensbelang zijn (zoals banken en ministeries). Snel naar productie gaan is daar een uitdaging. Jouw rol is om met onze teamleden de discussie aan te gaan met security-officers en architecten. Je helpt hen in te zien hoe we op een veilige en verantwoorde manier die eerste versies live kunnen krijgen. Je brengt de oplossing betrouwbaar naar productie. Je zorgt voor geautomatiseerde tests, evaluaties, security, CI/CD, monitoring en logging. Je blijft betrokken bij livegang en stabilisatie en draagt bij aan het oplossen van technische blokkades in de klantomgeving.
• Je verbetert op basis van gebruik en maakt lessen herbruikbaar. Je verzamelt feedback, meet kwaliteit en gebruik, begeleidt de technische ingebruikname en vertaalt terugkerende patronen naar herbruikbare componenten, evaluatieframeworks en implementatieaanpakken.
• Je staat er niet alleen voor. Hoewel je als FDE de technische leiding neemt over de AI-oplossing, werk je nauw samen met onze gespecialiseerde data-engineers, architecten en consultants. Jij focust op de AI-logica, integratie en de developer experience van de oplossing, terwijl je collega’s zich op de onderliggende cloud-infrastructuur en de organisatorische adoptie richten.

Waar je mee werkt

Onze stack varieert per klant en per vraagstuk. Als Forward Deployed AI Engineer werk je regelmatig in een technische omgeving die je niet zelf hebt gekozen. We zoeken daarom een sterke technische basis, brede nieuwsgierigheid en het vermogen om nieuwe tools snel eigen te maken.

AI-applicaties bouwen: Python, FastAPI, Pydantic en SQL. Voor RAG en agentic AI gebruiken we bijvoorbeeld LangGraph, LlamaIndex, Microsoft Agent Framework, MCP, embeddings en vector stores zoals Azure AI Search of pgvector.

Integreren en naar productie brengen: Microsoft Azure is ons meest gebruikte cloudplatform, met onder andere Microsoft Foundry, Azure OpenAI en Azure Container Apps. Je verbindt AI met klantdata en bestaande systemen via API’s en werkt met Docker en CI/CD via GitHub Actions of Azure DevOps.

Kwaliteit en gebruik verbeteren: je werkt met geautomatiseerde tests, AI-evaluaties en monitoring. Denk aan Azure AI Evaluation, Application Insights en OpenTelemetry. Daarbij kijk je naar betrouwbaarheid, gebruikersfeedback, performance, security en kosten.

Werk je nu vooral met één cloud, framework of type AI-oplossing? Geen probleem. We zoeken diepgang, geen volledigheid. Belangrijker is dat je zorgvuldig bouwt, nieuwe technologie snel doorgrondt en kunt uitleggen waarom een technische keuze past bij het klantprobleem.

Hier herken jij jezelf in

Je bent een software engineer, AI engineer, machine learning engineer of technisch consultant die aantoonbaar zelf bouwt. Je krijgt energie van techniek én van direct samenwerken met klanten en gebruikers. Je hoeft nog niet ieder onderdeel van de rol volledig te beheersen. Afhankelijk van je ervaring werk je zelfstandig of samen met een ervaren collega.

• Je hebt een sterke software-engineeringbasis. Je programmeert bijvoorbeeld in Python en hebt ervaring met API’s, integraties, versiebeheer en testen. Je hebt via werk, stages, onderzoek, open source of persoonlijke projecten laten zien dat je werkende software kunt bouwen.
• Je begrijpt moderne AI-oplossingen. Je hebt ervaring met, of aantoonbare interesse in, LLM’s, RAG, evaluatie en agentic workflows. Je begrijpt ook wanneer reguliere softwarelogica beter past dan AI.
• Je maakt van een onduidelijk vraagstuk een werkende oplossing. Je stelt vragen, maakt aannames expliciet en brengt een complex probleem terug tot een eerste leverbare stap. Daarna verbeter je de oplossing op basis van echte data en feedback van gebruikers.
• Je werkt graag direct met klanten en eindgebruikers. Je luistert, vraagt door en legt technische keuzes begrijpelijk uit. Je kunt constructief aangeven wanneer een gevraagde oplossing niet haalbaar is of het werkelijke probleem niet oplost.
• Je neemt verantwoordelijkheid voor kwaliteit en resultaat. Je kijkt verder dan een geslaagde demo en blijft betrokken bij testen, deployment, gebruik en stabilisatie. Daarbij heb je oog voor security, privacy, betrouwbaarheid en Responsible AI.

Ervaring met alle genoemde technologieën is geen vereiste. Belangrijker is dat je een sterke technische basis combineert met nieuwsgierigheid, leervermogen en de motivatie om software dicht bij de gebruiker te bouwen.

Je hebt academisch of hbo-niveau in een technische richting, of een gelijkwaardig niveau opgebouwd via ervaring. We kijken vooral naar wat je hebt gebouwd, geleerd en geleverd. Je communiceert sterk in het Nederlands en Engels.

Je start met een intensieve ontwikkelfase van vier weken. Tijdens een gezamenlijke praktijkopdracht breng je je nieuwe kennis direct in de praktijk.

Daarna ga je aan de slag bij een opdrachtgever en werk je mee aan echte data- en AI-vraagstukken. Afhankelijk van jouw achtergrond, interesses en ambities kun je doorgroeien naar een rol als Data Engineer, Data Analyst, Data Scientist, AI Engineer, Machine Learning Specialist of Business Intelligence Specialist. Ook buiten deze functietitels liggen er volop mogelijkheden.

Je krijgt begeleiding van een Talent Manager en blijft jezelf ontwikkelen, ook nadat je bij een opdrachtgever bent gestart. Zo werk je toe naar een carrière waarin je jouw analytische talent inzet voor vraagstukken die er echt toe doen. Binnen ongeveer een jaar kun je doorgroeien tot een volwaardig Data Expert.

In this role, you will work on the discovery and productionization of machine-learning-driven trading strategies, while helping guide junior researchers and collaborating closely with trading, engineering, and infrastructure teams.

Your role

1. Creating, testing, and deploying machine-learning-based statistical arbitrage strategies in live trading environments
