When you hear the name DAF Trucks, you might not immediately think of large machine shops. Yet a significant part of the engine plant consists of machining operations. As a CNC operator, you’ll perform machining operations on engine blocks, camshafts, cylinder heads, and other components. Are you a true craftsman with experience in metalworking, and do you want to learn more about machining—turning, milling, and drilling? Then read on, and you might soon be working as a CNC Operator at the DAF Trucks engine plant in Eindhoven.

who are you
As a CNC Operator, you’ll feel right at home working with the machinery at the engine factory.

• You have experience operating and adjusting CNC-controlled machines;
• You preferably have experience with machining operations, particularly milling and turning;
• You have a technical background in your education;
• You have work experience as an operator;
• You can perform quality checks using measuring tools.

what will you do
In the engine plant’s machining department, various engine components are machined. Each department has a set of machines dedicated to producing a single component, such as the cylinder head, the camshaft, or the engine block.

As a CNC operator, you are responsible for performing machining operations using CNC machines. Common operations include: milling, turning, drilling, tapping, and grinding.

Together with your colleagues, you will work within a machine park. Your tasks may include: starting up and operating machines, loading programs, changing tools, or troubleshooting malfunctions. You ensure that the production process runs smoothly and that production targets are met. In addition, you are jointly responsible for quality control: measuring and inspecting parts.

The work is performed in a 3-shift rotation: day (7:00 –15:30), evening (15:30 - 0:00), and night (0:00 – 7:00).

So what does your workday look like? There’s plenty to do in the warehouse this summer. You start the day with your team. The team leader explains the plan. One day you’ll be picking up books, the next you’ll be packing boxes. You’ll be walking and moving around a lot. That’s great for your fitness! 🏃‍♂️

You’ll work in a two-shift rotation. The early shift runs from 7:00 AM to 2:45 PM, leaving the afternoon completely free. The late shift runs from 3:00 PM to 10:45 PM. That way, there’s always plenty of time for fun activities and friends! 🚀

At VanDijk, you’ll be working in the warehouse of one of the largest schoolbook suppliers in the Netherlands. All schoolbooks for high school students are shipped from Kampen.

There’s a large terrace where you can relax in the sun during your break. There’s also a cafeteria with delicious sandwiches. Transportation? Taken care of! A free bus runs to and from Kampen. And the best part is that you’ll get to meet lots of new people along the way!

what will you do
Curious about what a typical workday looks like? 🕶

You start your shift with your colleagues in the department where you’re scheduled to work that day. After the team leader briefly explains the plan, you get right to work. One moment you’re walking through the warehouse with an scanner to gather the right books, and the next you’re at the packing table, quickly preparing packages for shipment. You’re on the move all day long, so you’ve already got that workout in the bag by the end of your shift! 🏃‍♂️

Between weeks 28 and 35, you’ll work on a flexible shift schedule, which is ideal for your free time. One week, you’ll have the morning shift from 7:00 AM to 2:45 PM, giving you plenty of time for your own plans the rest of the afternoon. The following week, you’ll work the afternoon shift from 3:00 PM to 10:45 PM, giving you the freedom to sleep in or start your day at a leisurely pace in the morning. This way, you can perfectly balance this temporary job with your social life and still have plenty of time for fun activities. 🚀
